The Brokenhead Housing Authority is aware of a post circulating in the community that includes information about a housing project that is not accurate. We understand that housing is a deeply important issue for families, and when information is shared that isn’t correct, it can create confusion, frustration, and division. We’re sharing the information below so community members have clear facts and can ask questions directly.
The facts are as follows:
- Housing decisions are made by the BON Housing Committee, which is made up of community members. The Portfolio Council member attends as a non-voting participant.
- Chief and Council do not make decisions about housing allocations, new home builds, renovations, or repairs.
- The home being built uses a 4-bedroom floor plan, with additional bedrooms planned in the basement to accommodate the size of the family and the specialized needs of multiple children, including medical needs. The decision to modify the home in this way was made in good conscience, with the children’s best interests at the forefront.
- We acknowledge and thank the Housing Committee for establishing a process that supports informed decision-making, with due consideration of needs, and in the best interests of community members and the community as a whole.
- Square footage is based on above-ground livable space. This home is considered a 1,380 sq. ft. home.
- This floor plan is also being used for other homes within Brokenhead.
- Basement or floor-plan adjustments to reflect family size or medical needs are not new and are not unique to this build.
- Jordan’s Principle funds are not being used for this build.
- The audit ending March 31, 2024 is complete and was presented to the community as part of the consolidated audit.
Moving forward, and in partnership with Administration, the Brokenhead Housing Authority are implementing two new strategies to strengthen communication and connect housing work more directly to the needs of our Nation. These steps have been in development over the past year as part of our ongoing efforts to improve housing engagement and transparency and are not tied to any one conversation or post.
- A Brokenhead Community Housing Forum will be held on February 11, 2026 to provide updates on housing development, explain housing processes and funding sources, and create space for members to ask questions and share priorities.
- A standalone Housing Authority audit is being completed this year to improve clarity for membership and strengthen understanding of housing finances and decision-making. The audit ending March 31, 2025 is underway and is approximately 80% complete.
These strategies reflect our commitment to keeping members informed, improving transparency, and ensuring housing decisions and planning remain responsive to the needs of our Nation.
