Historically, resource projects operating in our territory have impacted our environment and ways of life without any benefit back to community. This must end. Brokenhead Ojibway Nation (BON) council feels that any proposal to extract resources from our territory must be presented to our membership. This is the expectation of BON for all resource development proponents and is an important step to ensuring our members are meaningfully involved in decision-making.
BON Council does not hold a position on this, rather it is seeking a mandate from the community before engaging in future discussions. This is why we are holding a referendum — to allow all eligible community members to have their say and determine the direction collectively. The vote was scheduled at a time when most members are available and gathered in community to ensure maximum participation and transparency.
As with any major initiative, Brokenhead Ojibway Nation acknowledges and respects the democratic right of our members to peacefully assemble and express their views. This is a legitimate and important part of community dialogue and a sign of a healthy, engaged Nation.
We encourage all members to:
✅ Respect differing viewpoints
✅ Participate in the democratic process by voting
Next Steps & Commitment to Dialogue
We are committed to open, respectful dialogue and transparency throughout this process. After the referendum:
- All votes will be counted and verified.
- Results will be publicly shared.
- Council will review the outcome and proceed based on the community’s direction.
If you have questions about the the referendum, or the voting process, please reach out to Councillor Winston Desjarlais at wdesjarlais@brokenheadojibwaynation.com.
