The Brokenhead Ojibway Housing Authority is seeking a motivated and community-minded individual to fill the position of Youth Housing Intern. This internship opportunity is designed to provide hands-on experience in housing administration, maintenance, tenant relations, and housing operations while supporting youth career development and community housing initiatives.  This position offers an excellent opportunity for a young adult interested in pursuing a career in housing, construction, maintenance, administration, or skilled trades.

Position Summary

The Youth Housing Intern will work alongside Housing Authority staff and maintenance personnel to gain practical experience and develop workplace skills in housing services and operations. The successful candidate will assist with daily housing activities, tenant support, maintenance coordination, and community housing projects.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Housing Administration / Management

  • Assist with filing, data entry, and maintaining housing records
  • Support staff with housing applications and tenant documentation
  • Assist with organizing meetings, notices, and correspondence
  • Learn basic housing policies and procedures

Housing Maintenance

  • Assist maintenance staff with inspections and basic repairs
  • Support maintenance scheduling and work order tracking
  • Help monitor housing conditions and report maintenance concerns
  • Participate in seasonal maintenance activities

Construction / Renovation

  • Assist with housing renovation and repair projects
  • Support contractors and maintenance crews during projects
  • Learn workplace safety practices and proper tool handling
  • Participate in housing improvement initiatives

Working with Tenants

  • Provide respectful and professional interaction with community members
  • Assist with tenant communication and follow-up
  • Support tenant education and housing orientation activities
  • Help promote positive tenant relationships and community wellbeing

Trades Apprenticeship Exposure

  • Gain introductory experience in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, or general construction
  • Learn practical trade-related skills under supervision
  • Explore future apprenticeship and career opportunities

Qualifications

  • Youth or young adult interested in housing, maintenance, administration, or trades
  • Strong willingness to learn and work as part of a team
  • Reliable, respectful, and motivated
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism
  • Valid driver’s license is considered an asset
  • Must provide clear pre-employment drug test and participate in future random drug testing.
