Position Title: People Services Officer
Location: BON Development Corp. – Brokenhead Ojibway Nation
Employment Type: Full-Time
Position Summary
The People Services Officer is responsible for all HR and payroll functions across BON Development Corp. and its affiliated businesses. This role ensures legal compliance, fosters a positive workplace culture, and supports all stages of the employee lifecycle—from recruitment and onboarding to payroll and offboarding. The Officer will also work closely with management to implement workforce development strategies.
Key Responsibilities
Human Resources
- Develop and update HR policies, procedures, and employee handbooks.
- Lead recruitment, onboarding, and offboarding processes.
- Maintain secure and accurate employee records.
- Advise on performance management and disciplinary actions.
- Coordinate staff training and track certifications.
- Support retention, engagement, and wellness initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with labour, health and safety laws.
Payroll Administration
- Process bi-weekly payroll for all BON-affiliated entities.
- Verify hours, deductions, and leave documentation.
- Administer benefits (pension, health, vacation).
- Issue ROEs, T4s, and other payroll reports, as well as Liaise with Finance, CRA, and service providers to ensure accuracy and compliance.
Cross-Functional Support
- Serve as primary contact for HR/payroll inquiries.
- Maintain and optimize payroll/HRIS systems.
- Prepare HR and payroll reports for leadership.
- Contribute to organizational development and employment strategy.
Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in HR, Business Admin, or related field.
- 3–5 years of HR/payroll experience, ideally in a multi-business setting.
- Solid understanding of employment law and payroll compliance.
- Experience with systems such as Payworks, ADP, or Ceridian.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage sensitive information professionally.
- Experience working with First Nations or Indigenous organizations is an asset.
Working Conditions
- Based in-office, with occasional travel to business sites.
- May require additional hours during payroll periods or major HR projects.
