Formed in 2023, Treaty One Nations Inc. (T1N) represents the interests of the seven signatory First Nations of Treaty No. 1 — the first of the 11 numbered Treaties, originally signed on August 3, 1871, at Lower Fort Garry following several days of discussions and ceremonies. T1N is committed to advancing areas of collective self-governance, cultural preservation, and community well-being for its Nations. T1N is responsible for the governance and oversight of the development of the jointly held Treaty One Lands, and the leadership of the seven Nations form the Governing Council of T1N.

PURPOSE

The Advisory Council & Event Coordinator is responsible for the coordination, facilitation, and administrative support of the Treaty One Promise Keepers Council (PKC), the Treaty One Knowledge Keepers Council (KKC), and the Lands Technical Advisory Council (LTAC), as well as the planning and coordination of events and gatherings related to the work of the councils and other Treaty One Nation initiatives.

This role ensures consistent communication, scheduling, record-keeping, event logistics, and follow-through on recommendations and actions arising from the councils. The coordinator plays a key role in supporting the engagement of youth and Elders/Knowledge Keepers in Treaty One Nation rebuilding efforts, governance renewal, cultural preservation initiatives, and community engagement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Advisory Council & Event Coordinator will:

  • Organize and facilitate regular bi-weekly and monthly meetings for the PKC, KKC, and LTAC.

  • Prepare and distribute agendas, minutes, briefing materials, and background documents in advance of meetings.

  • Track attendance, maintain quorum, support consensus-based decision-making, and promote culturally respectful dialogue.

  • Liaise with council members to confirm appointments, terms, and ongoing participation.

Administrative Support:

  • Maintain accurate records of council recommendations, decisions, and attendance.

  • Draft formal correspondence and recommendations for submission to the Governing Council.

  • Coordinate logistics such as travel, honoraria, and accommodations.

  • Develop and maintain both physical and digital filing systems for council documentation.

Event Planning & Coordination:

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute events tied to council activities, Treaty One Nations programs, and community engagement.

  • Manage all event logistics including venues, catering, AV, transportation, and supplies.

  • Oversee event budgets, timelines, and post-event evaluations in collaboration with internal staff and vendors.

Engagement & Communication:

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for council members and ensure timely communication.

  • Support youth members in engaging their communities both on- and off-reserve.

  • Coordinate outreach with Elders and youth to inform governance and rebuilding work.

  • Promote council initiatives through appropriate communication channels in collaboration with the communications team.

Cultural Integrity & Relationship Building:

  • Ensure activities reflect the protocols and values of the Seven Sacred Teachings and Treaty One principles.

  • Build and maintain respectful, trusting relationships with council members, leadership, and staff.

  • Uphold inclusive, culturally appropriate practices in all duties.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Post-secondary education in First Nation governance, public administration, social work, education, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

  • Strong understanding of Treaty One history, governance frameworks, and community dynamics.

  • Knowledge of First Nation protocols, teachings, and intergenerational engagement practices.

  • Experience working with First Nation youth, Elders, or advisory councils in a coordination or facilitation role.

  • Experience in planning, coordinating, and delivering events and gatherings.

  • Strong organizational, time management, and communication skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and virtual meeting platforms.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with multiple stakeholders.

  • Experience with event budgeting and vendor coordination is an asset.
